Ergonomics in the office

A bit on ergonomics in the office...
The number of office workers who suffer from fatigue, numbness or tingling in the arms, hands and wrists has increased dramatically with the evolving computer technology today. Proper keyboard height, ergonomic palm supports, mouse tray location, and feet and knee positioning all play a part in minimizing these injuries. Studies have also shown that keeping the wrists in a neutral position may help relieve symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome, RSI and other wrist-related injuries.

Ergonomic Chairs

Exercise ball ergonomic chair
The exercise ball chair is another completely different type of ergonomic chair. As the name states, it is a ball, which is large enough to support the user in any long-term sitting usage, and works well as a desk chair or computer chair. The major advantage to this type of chair is that it encourages movement and active sitting.

Recliner chair
For some people, sitting in a reclined position is most comfortable for their backs. For example, people with pain from lumbar spinal stenosis or degenerative disc disease often will feel most comfortable in a reclined position with feet propped up on a footrest.

Types of ergonomic office chairs

So what types of ergonomic office chairs are there?

Kneeling ergonomic chairThe kneeling chair is an office chair that has no back, and places the user in a modified kneeling position. The design encourages good posture by sliding the hips forward and aligning the back, shoulder and neck.

Saddle ergonomic chairThe saddle chair is another ergonomic chair that can be used as a desk chair or computer chair. This type of office chair is in the shape of a horse's saddle and puts the user in a position somewhere between sitting and standing, similar to the position used when riding a horse. This allows the legs to drop naturally, and widen, creating a healthy and stable position.

In my next post I'll continue with two more ergonomic chairs

Ergonomic Office Chairs

An ergonomic office chair provides for the lower back support, promotes good posture, and helps alleviate back problems. There are many types of ergonomic chairs available for use in the office and home. No one type of office or home chair is necessarily the best, but there are some things that are very important to look for in a good ergonomic office chair. These things will allow the individual user to make the chair work well for his or her specific needs.

Later on in my posts I'll cover the new designs and importance of having an ergonomic office chair, expecially when so many hours of each day are spent sitting in the chair.
